Shot Blasting

Shot & Abrasive Blasting

Williams Engineering provides professional shot blasting and abrasive blasting services in Southampton.

Our abrasive blasting services remove rust, corrosion, mill scale, old paint, coatings and surface contamination, creating a clean, correctly prepared surface ready for the application of new protective coating and paint systems.

We support the marine, industrial, petrochemical and waste management sectors, providing abrasive blasting and surface preparation for structural steelwork, vessels, tanks, marine equipment, machinery, fabricated components and other steel structures.

Our on-site abrasive blasting services are available throughout Southampton, Hampshire and surrounding areas, enabling our experienced team to carry out surface preparation and protective coating work directly at your premises, vessel or operational site.

Abrasive Blasting Surface Preparation Standards

Depending on the condition of the steelwork and the protective coating system being applied, surfaces can be blast cleaned to different preparation grades:

  • Sa 1 – Light blast cleaning: Removes poorly adhering mill scale, rust, paint coatings and foreign matter. Suitable where only light surface preparation is required.
  • Sa 2 – Thorough blast cleaning: Removes most mill scale, rust, coatings and contaminants, with remaining material firmly adhered to the surface.
  • Sa 2½ – Very thorough blast cleaning: A high standard of surface preparation where mill scale, rust, coatings and foreign matter are removed, leaving only slight traces in the form of spots or stripes. Commonly specified for high-performance protective coating systems.
  • Sa 3 – Blast cleaning to visually clean steel: The highest visual cleanliness grade, removing mill scale, rust, coatings and foreign matter to leave the steel with a uniform metallic appearance.

Wet Blasting

Williams Engineering provides professional wet blasting services in Southampton and the surrounding areas.  This effective surface preparation method combines water with compressed air and abrasive materials to remove rust, corrosion, old coatings and surface contaminants while significantly reducing airborne dust.

Ideal for sensitive environments where dust control is essential, wet blasting leaves a clean, prepared surface ready for the application of protective coatings.

Ideal for: Marine environments, industrial sites, structural steelwork, plant maintenance and areas requiring minimal airborne dust.

On-Site Blasting & Protective Coatings

From initial surface preparation through to the application of the final protective coating system, Williams Engineering can provide a complete blasting and painting service. Our mobile capabilities allow us to undertake projects on-site, helping customers reduce transportation requirements and minimise operational downtime.
